YouTube thumbnail size checker
Drop your thumbnail in and get an instant pass/fail on every YouTube requirement — resolution, 16:9 ratio, file size and format — against the current 2026 spec. Everything runs in your browser; the image never leaves your device.
Is your thumbnail the right size for YouTube?
A thumbnail that’s the wrong size doesn’t just look bad — it can get rejected on upload, appear blurry, or be cropped awkwardly across devices. This checker reads your image in the browser and gives an instant pass/fail against every current YouTube requirement, so you catch the problem before you upload, not after your video is live.

What changed — and what most tools still get wrong
Why thumbnails look blurry
Almost always one of two reasons: the image was exported too small (below 1280 wide) and YouTube upscaled it, or it was a small image blown up to fit, which bakes in the blur before upload. The fix is to export at native high resolution — ideally 3840×2160 — and never enlarge a small image. If your file is too big instead, compress it (JPG for photos) rather than shrinking the dimensions.
If it fails the check
Don’t reshoot or redesign — just fix the file. Run it through the YouTube image resizer to hit the exact 4K or 1280×720 size and 16:9 ratio in one click, then re-check here. Once the size passes, preview how it actually reads in the feed with the thumbnail tester — correct size and strong design are two different jobs, and you need both.
Everything on this page runs inside your browser. Your thumbnail never leaves your device, so you can check unpublished designs safely.
Questions
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be in 2026?
YouTube now recommends 3840×2160 (4K), with a 16:9 aspect ratio and a minimum width of 640px. The long-time standard 1280×720 still works, but 4K looks sharper on TVs and large screens.
What is the YouTube thumbnail file size limit?
Up to 2 MB when you upload from a phone, and up to 50 MB from a desktop computer. Use JPG for photos to stay small, PNG for text and sharp graphics.
What aspect ratio should a YouTube thumbnail be?
16:9 — the same shape as the video player. Any other ratio gets letterboxed or cropped, which wastes space and looks unprofessional. Both 1280×720 and 3840×2160 are 16:9.
Is 1280×720 still okay for YouTube thumbnails?
Yes, it still works and won’t be rejected. But YouTube now recommends 3840×2160 (4K) because thumbnails appear on TVs and large screens where 720p can look soft. Design at 4K if you can.
Why does my thumbnail look blurry?
Usually because it was uploaded too small or upscaled from a low-resolution image. Export at the native resolution (ideally 3840×2160) and never enlarge a small image to fit.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The checker runs entirely in your browser — your image never leaves your device.
