Niche research and the Enter, Wait, Avoid verdict

The niche score is a TubeMind estimate out of 100 that mixes demand, opportunity for small channels, money and ease of entry. The verdict turns that score, the niche difficulty and recent small channel breakouts into one of three research signals: Enter now, Wait or Avoid.

Open Niche research

Who it is for

  • New creators choosing a first niche for a channel
  • Faceless channel owners checking if small channels still break out in a topic
  • Creators choosing between two to four possible topics
  • Anyone who wants to see the formula behind a niche rating

Use something else when

  • A promise that a niche will earn money or get you views
  • Topics TubeMind has not indexed yet, which show No data yet instead of a verdict
  • Judging one single video idea, where the outlier multiplier is the better tool

How to use it

  1. Open Niche research and search a topic, or filter by language and category.
  2. Scan the signal on each card, then open a niche to see its full report.
  3. Read the verdict, then check the young winners: small channels that broke out lately.
  4. Open How this is calculated to see the formula behind the score, difficulty and verdict.
  5. Add two to four niches in Compare niches to see the same signals side by side.
  6. Track a niche you like to follow its alerts.

How the niche score is worked out

A niche is a focused topic and audience, such as scary stories or cricket analysis. TubeMind groups indexed channels into niches and scores each one from 0 to 100:

score = 100 x (0.4 demand + 0.3 opportunity + 0.2 money + 0.1 ease of entry)

  • Demand (40%). The median average views of the niche's channels, on a scale from 0 at 1,000 views to full marks at 100,000 views. A niche whose middle channel averages 10,000 views gets half marks.
  • Opportunity (30%). Mostly the median views per subscriber, plus the share of channels that are young winners, with full marks for that part at 8%.
  • Money (20%). The average base RPM of the niche's channels divided by 10, capped at full marks. RPM is itself an estimate, see Revenue estimate.
  • Ease of entry (10%). 100 minus the difficulty score, explained below.

Medians are used so one giant channel cannot lift a whole niche, and adding more channels alone does not raise the score. Scores are recomputed after every crawl cycle.

Difficulty and young winners

Difficulty (0 to 100) estimates how hard it is for a new channel to break in. It mixes three things: how crowded the niche is in the index (40%), how few channels under a year old get 10,000+ average views (35%), and how much the biggest channels hold the views (25%). Up to 33 is Easy to rank, 34 to 66 is Moderate, and above 66 is Hard to rank.

Young winners are channels with 10,000 subscribers or fewer that posted a video at 5x or more of their own baseline in the last 30 days. They are the clearest sign that a niche still lets new channels in. The multiplier behind them is explained in Outlier score.

How the verdict is decided

VerdictRuleWhat it suggests
Enter nowScore 60 or more, at least 5 young winners, difficulty 66 or lessDemand is good and small channels are breaking out right now
WaitScore 45 or more, but one of the Enter now tests failedPossible, but you need a sharper angle or a stronger start
AvoidScore under 45Hard for a brand new channel
No data yetNot enough channels indexed to scoreNot a negative verdict, the index has not covered it yet

A niche must pass all three Enter now tests at once. Say a niche has a score of 72 but only 4 young winners. It fails the young winner test, so it shows Wait, even with a high score. A hard difficulty above 66 also blocks Enter now, whatever the score.

The verdict always uses the young winner count for the whole niche. Filters you set on a report can change what you see, but they never flip the verdict.

The niche list uses softer names for the same signal: Explore further, Investigate, Use caution and Needs data.

Reading a niche report and comparing niches

Open any niche at /advanced/niches/ followed by its name to see the full report. Next to the verdict you find demand over the last 90 days against the 90 days before, the share of views held by the top 10 channels, saturation, estimated RPM, faceless and monetized shares, the young winners themselves, title patterns that beat the niche average and the best upload slot.

Every number has a formula under How this is calculated. Read the young winners' actual videos before you trust a label.

In Compare niches you pick 2 to 4 niches and read the same live signals side by side. A highlight only marks the highest or lowest value in your selection. The page shows trade offs and does not name an overall winner.

Limits and caveats

  • The score, difficulty and verdict are TubeMind estimates from public statistics of indexed channels. They are not YouTube data and not a success probability.
  • A verdict is a research priority, not a prediction. Enter now does not promise views or earnings.
  • Coverage matters. A niche with few indexed channels gives rougher numbers, and an unindexed topic shows No data yet. You can request a niche.
  • RPM and revenue figures are model estimates. Real earnings depend on monetization, advertisers and audience.
  • How many niche searches you can run per day depends on your plan. See Plans and limits.

Questions

How do I know if a YouTube niche is worth it?

Open the niche report and read the verdict together with the young winners. Enter now means the score is 60 or more, at least 5 small channels broke out in the last 30 days and difficulty is 66 or less. Then watch those winners' videos before you decide.

Why does a niche with a high score show Wait?

Enter now needs all three tests at once. A high score with fewer than 5 young winners, or with a difficulty above 66, stays at Wait.

Does Avoid mean the niche is bad?

No. Avoid means the score is under 45, so it is hard for a brand new channel by this model. An experienced creator with a strong angle may still do well there. It is a research signal, not a rule.

Why does a niche show No data yet?

TubeMind has not indexed enough channels in that niche to score it. This is not a negative verdict. You can request the niche so the crawler looks for its channels.

Why does the niche list say Explore further instead of Enter now?

They are the same signal. The niche list uses softer names: Explore further, Investigate, Use caution and Needs data. The report shows Enter now, Wait, Avoid and No data yet.

Is the niche score YouTube data?

No. It is a TubeMind estimate built from public statistics of the channels in our index. YouTube does not rate niches.
