Micro niches on YouTube: how to find one you can win

We split 30 YouTube niches into 903 micro niches. Only 15% are open right now: 32% of Shorts groups but 5% of long-form ones. How to find yours.

A micro niche on YouTube is a small group of channels inside a bigger niche that make the same narrow kind of video, like cold case files inside true crime. Of 903 micro niches TubeMind tracked in October 2026, only 15% had small channels breaking out, and Shorts groups were open more than six times as often as long-form.

Key takeaways

  • Of 903 micro niches across 30 niches, 137 (15%) were rated Enter now on 29 October 2026. 660 were Wait and 106 were Avoid.
  • Format changes the odds more than topic: 32% of Shorts micro niches were open (110 of 345) against 5% of long-form ones (27 of 558).
  • A hard niche can still hold an open corner. 6 of the 9 niches we rate hard had at least one Enter now micro niche, and Sports Stories alone had 7.
  • In open micro niches the median channel had 14,550 subscribers and 45% of channels were under 10K. In Avoid groups the median channel had 132,000.
  • A good score is not enough. 291 micro niches scored 70 or more but stayed Wait, because fewer than two small channels had a recent breakout.
  • YouTube never says it rewards narrow channels. Its help pages say recommendations follow what viewers watch and enjoy, and that is the reason a clear micro niche helps.

The first thing that stood out when we ran the split on 29 October 2026 was where the open corners sat. Sports Stories, a niche TubeMind rates hard, came out with 7 open micro niches. Motivation, rated moderate, had none, and Crypto, Gaming Guides and AI Tools had none at all. The broad label told us less than the small corner inside it. If you have not picked a broad niche yet, start with our guide on how to find a YouTube niche, then come back here to go one level deeper.

What is a micro niche on YouTube?

A micro niche is the third step down a ladder. The niche is the broad topic, the sub niche is a style of video inside it, and the micro niche is the narrow, specific thing a group of channels keeps making. Viewers of a micro niche tend to watch several of those channels, which is why it is the level where you can see your real competition.

LevelExampleSize in TubeMind’s indexWhat it tells you
NicheTrue crime (faceless)367 channelsRough demand and money for the whole topic
Sub nicheCrime documentariesToo mixed to measure as one groupThe style of video; too broad to show your competition
Micro nicheCold case files24 channels, 13 of them under 10K subscribersWho your viewers already watch, and whether small channels win there now

In plain words: the niche tells you if there is money in the topic, and the micro niche tells you if there is room for you. A true crime channel competes with the whole topic on paper, but in practice it competes with the 24 or so channels making the same kind of cold case video.

TubeMind does not build micro niches from keywords. It groups the channels of one niche and one format by the words they use in their channel title, description and recent upload titles, and keeps groups with 5 or more channels. The typical micro niche has 11 channels (the range is 5 to 78), and the typical niche splits into about 29 micro niches.

How a micro niche gets an Enter now, Wait or Avoid verdict

Each micro niche gets a group score from 0 to 100, using the same formula as the TubeMind niche score but run on that group’s channels only. Then one more check decides the verdict. This is the rule used for the 29 October 2026 figures in this study. We tightened the score and the rule on 30 October 2026, so live verdicts can differ from the numbers here:

  • Enter now: group score 70 or more, and at least 2 channels under 10,000 subscribers had a video at 5x their usual views in the last 30 days. We call those channels young winners.
  • Wait: group score 55 or more, but the young winner check failed.
  • Avoid: group score under 55.

The young winner rule matters more than it looks. A high score can come from big channels doing well, which tells a newcomer nothing. Two small channels breaking out in the same month is proof the door is open right now.

Two TubeMind micro niche cards in Space and Science: universe explainers rated Enter now with 20 channels and 2 young winners, and James Webb videos rated Wait with 14 channels and 0 young winners
Two micro niches inside Space & Science on 30 October 2026. The James Webb group scores higher (76 against 73) but is rated Wait, because none of its small channels had a recent breakout.

What 903 micro niches show

Here is how the three verdicts compare. Each number is the median across the micro niches in that row.

VerdictMicro nichesMedian channel sizeChannels under 10K subsYoung winnersGroup scoreDifficultyTypical avg views
Enter now137 (15%)14,55045%3793018,500
Wait660 (73%)79,95025%0685127,600
Avoid106 (12%)132,00020%0517113,600

Read this table as three different markets. In an open micro niche, the median channel has under 15,000 subscribers, almost half the channels are under 10K subscribers, and three small channels broke out in the last month. In an Avoid group, the typical channel is about nine times bigger and nobody small is breaking through.

The views column is the surprise. Wait groups have the highest typical views of the three. Big views attract big channels, and big channels close the door. If you pick a micro niche only because its videos get the most views, you will often pick a Wait.

The other surprise is how many Wait groups look good on paper: 291 of the 660 Wait micro niches scored 70 or more. Their only problem is that no small channel is winning there this month. Those are worth watching, because one or two breakouts can flip them to Enter now on the next daily rebuild.

Shorts vs long-form: where the open micro niches are

The split by format is the biggest gap in the data. Almost one in three Shorts micro niches was open. For long-form it was about one in twenty.

Bar chart: 31.9% of Shorts micro niches rated Enter now, 15.2% of all micro niches, and 4.8% of long-form micro niches, from 903 micro niches in October 2026
Share of micro niches rated Enter now, by format. TubeMind index, 29 October 2026.

What this means for you: if you want the fastest proof that your idea works, a Shorts micro niche gives you better odds. Small Shorts channels break out more often, so the young winner check passes more often. Long-form openings are rarer but they exist, and 27 of them were open on the day we checked, including cold case files, wildlife documentaries and geography facts.

This does not mean Shorts earn more. Shorts RPM is usually far lower than long-form RPM; our post on how much YouTube pays for Shorts has the numbers. Many channels use an open Shorts micro niche to find out what viewers want, then make long-form on the topics that worked.

Hard niches still have open micro niches

A niche can be crowded overall and still have one corner where small channels are winning. These are the 9 niches TubeMind rates hard:

Niche (rated hard)Micro nichesEnter nowLong-form Enter nowExample open micro niche
Sports Stories6272Football, World Cup and Messi stories (31 channels, 14 under 10K)
Kids Learning4742ABC and phonics songs (49 channels, 23 under 10K)
Space & Science4541Space and universe explainers (20 channels, 10 under 10K)
Finance & Investing2720Stock market and IPO Shorts (16 channels, 11 under 10K)
Scary & Horror Stories2021Hindi horror stories (22 channels, 10 under 10K)
Make Money Online1711Wealth building and money management (8 channels, 4 under 10K)
AI Tools & News3500None open
Gaming Guides2700None open
Crypto2800None open

So a hard label is a reason to look closer, not a reason to leave. Six of these nine had at least one open micro niche, and five had a long-form one. The three with nothing open (AI tools, gaming guides and crypto) are crowded at every level we could measure, at least for now.

Two things to notice. First, the open long-form groups are mostly faceless formats: documentaries, facts, music and ambient sound. If that is the kind of channel you want, our list of faceless YouTube channel ideas goes into how they are made. Second, verdicts are rebuilt every day. Treat this table as a snapshot and check the live verdict in the niche report before you start.

How narrow is too narrow?

Too narrow means there are not enough viewers to watch 50 or 100 of your videos. You cannot see search volume for a micro niche from outside, but you can see the channels already serving it. Our rule is simple: TubeMind drops any group with fewer than 5 channels, because a handful of channels is not enough proof that viewers exist.

The smallest open micro niche in our data had 5 channels, and the wealth building group in Make Money Online had only 8. That is fine when the views are there: its channels averaged around 60,000 views per video. A group of 8 channels with a few hundred views each would be a warning sign.

The opposite problem is a micro niche that is narrow but closed. Christmas paper crafts, inside DIY & Home, had 26 channels and not one of them under 10,000 subscribers, with a median of 407,000. That group is rated Avoid. Narrow is not the same as open, and seasonal topics like this one only get views a few weeks a year.

How to find your micro niche in 6 steps

  1. Pick a broad niche you could make 50 videos about. The YouTube niche explorer shows every niche TubeMind tracks with its score and difficulty.
  2. Open the niche report and scroll to Micro-niches. In the niche reports, Enter now groups come first. Note two or three that fit what you can make.
  3. Study the young winners. Open the breakout video from each small channel and write down the hook, the title pattern and the length. Our guide to YouTube outlier videos explains how to read a breakout so you copy the idea and not the video.
  4. Check the money before you commit. The RPM by niche tool shows estimated RPM per niche. Be careful with finance and health: YouTube says it elevates high-quality voices on topics like personal finance and medical information, so a new faceless channel has a harder time there.
  5. Get a second opinion on the idea. Type your niche into the niche checker for its verdict and the signals behind it.
  6. Make your first 10 videos, then read the data. Each micro niche page has a first 10 videos plan built from the breakouts in that group. After 10 uploads, keep the topics that beat your channel median and drop the rest.

What YouTube says about going narrow

YouTube has never said it rewards narrow channels. What it does say points the same way for a different reason. Its help page on recommendations says “YouTube’s recommendations are driven by what viewers watch and enjoy” and tells creators that it is essential to get to know your audience. A micro niche makes that easier: you know who watches, and so does the system.

YouTube also says each video is judged on its own fresh performance data, and its page on how videos reach viewers tells creators to keep experimenting with new topics and formats. So a micro niche is a starting point, not a cage. Once you have viewers, YouTube suggests you consider topics based on what your viewers watch, a simple way to find your next micro niche.

Three micro niche myths our data does not support

  • “Micro niches always pay more per view.” Open micro niches had a median estimated RPM of $3.02, against $3.33 for Wait groups and $2.17 for Avoid ones. RPM follows the topic and the viewer country. For niche level numbers, see our list of the highest paying YouTube niches.
  • “Any micro niche is low competition.” Only 15% of the 903 we tracked were open. Most were Wait, and 106 were closed to small channels.
  • “After 10 to 15 videos the algorithm knows your niche.” We found no YouTube source for this number. YouTube’s own pages talk about how each video performs with viewers and never give a video count.

Limits of this data

  • Micro niches are built from the words channels use, so a few groups mix topics, and labels are word lists until names are generated. One horror movie group, for example, landed inside Sports Stories.
  • This is a snapshot from 29 October 2026. Groups and verdicts are rebuilt daily from new uploads and stats.
  • TubeMind tracks 30 niches, mostly in English, Hindi and Urdu. Plenty of micro niches exist outside them.
  • Enter now means small channels are winning there now. It is not a promise of views or income for your channel.

Method and sources. TubeMind index, 903 micro niches across 30 niches (558 long-form, 345 Shorts), computed 29 October 2026 from 11,338 tracked channels. Channels of one niche and one format are grouped by TF-IDF over channel title, description and recent upload titles (words and word pairs) with spherical k-means, and groups under 5 channels are dropped. Group score = the TubeMind niche score formula as it stood on 29 October 2026, applied to the group’s channels. Enter now = score 70+ and 2+ channels under 10,000 subscribers with a video at 5x their usual views in the last 30 days; Wait = score 55+; Avoid = below 55. All figures in the tables are medians across micro niches unless counts are given. Counts are public YouTube statistics at our last refresh; see how TubeMind scores work. Official sources: YouTube Help on recommendations (16533387), how videos reach viewers (141805) and audience insights (13616337), and How YouTube Works on recommendations, all checked 30 October 2026.

Frequently asked questions

What is a micro niche on YouTube?

A micro niche is a small group of channels inside a bigger niche that all make the same narrow kind of video, for example cold case files inside true crime, or WWII tank history Shorts inside history. In TubeMind’s index the typical micro niche has 11 channels, and a niche splits into about 29 of them.

Is a micro niche better than a broad niche for a new channel?

Often, but not always. A micro niche makes it easier to know who your viewer is and which channels you compete with. It does not make a closed market open: only 15% of the 903 micro niches we tracked in October 2026 showed small channels breaking out at the time.

How do I find a micro niche with low competition?

Look for groups where small channels are winning now: at least two channels under 10,000 subscribers with a video at 5x their usual views in the last 30 days, and a median channel size you could reach. TubeMind’s niche reports list every micro niche with that check already done.

Do micro niches pay more per view?

Not by default. In our data, open micro niches had a median estimated RPM of $3.02, close to the $3.33 of Wait groups. RPM follows the topic and the audience country, not how narrow the channel is. Your own YouTube Analytics is the only place to see your real RPM.

Can I widen my niche later?

Yes. YouTube says its system uses fresh performance data for each video, and its help pages tell creators to keep experimenting with new topics and formats. A common path is to start narrow, learn what your viewers watch, then move into the next micro niche those same viewers like.

Are Shorts micro niches easier to enter than long-form?

In our October 2026 data, yes by a wide margin: 32% of Shorts micro niches were rated Enter now (110 of 345) against 5% of long-form ones (27 of 558). Shorts groups had more small channels with recent breakouts.
