YouTube revenue and RPM: how estimates actually work

What RPM is, why it swings from under a dollar to double digits, and how any honest revenue estimate is built — shown as a low–high range, never a fake exact figure.

Nobody outside YouTube knows a channel’s exact earnings. Any tool that shows a single precise dollar figure is guessing and hiding it. An honest estimate is a range, built from public data and a clearly stated method. Here is the method.

RPM vs CPM — the number that matters

CPM is what advertisers pay per 1,000 ad impressions. RPM is what the creator actually keeps per 1,000 video views after YouTube’s share and after accounting for views that show no ad. RPM is the number that predicts income, and it varies enormously:

  • Finance, business, software — often $7–$30+ RPM.
  • Education, how-to — mid single digits to low teens.
  • Entertainment, vlogs, gaming — frequently under $2–$4.
  • Country matters too — a US/UK audience pays many times an audience in lower-ad-rate regions.

How a revenue estimate is built

The honest formula is straightforward:

monthly views × (RPM for this niche + country) ÷ 1,000 = ad revenue range

TubeMind applies an RPM table by niche and country to the channel’s recent monthly views and shows a low–high range, with the method on hover. It is labelled an estimate everywhere, and it deliberately excludes what cannot be seen from outside — sponsorships, memberships, affiliate and product income — which for many channels dwarf ad revenue.

Why the range is the point

A range forces honest decisions. If a niche only works at the top of its revenue range, that is a riskier bet than one that works at the bottom. Treat the low end as your planning number. For a fuller picture of what a channel is worth, the channel valuation tool combines estimated monthly profit with a sale multiple and shows every lever.

Use revenue to choose, not to dream

The practical move is to weigh RPM before you pick a niche. A high-RPM niche (see finding a niche) can out-earn a bigger low-RPM one with a fraction of the views — which is exactly why so many faceless creators choose finance and business over entertainment.
